Toyota Camry Timing Belt Replacement at TOP CONCEPT Philadelphia
This Toyota Camry came into our Northeast Philadelphia shop for a timing belt replacement on the V6 (1MZ-FE / 2GR-FE) engine. The factory recommends timing belt replacement around 90,000 miles, and on the V6 Camry/Avalon/Sienna platform, missing the interval is a major risk — these are interference engines, so a snapped belt usually means valve damage.

Why Replace the Timing Belt at the Right Interval
The V6 Toyota timing belt drives the camshafts and water pump. When it fails:
- Pistons hit valves on every cylinder — bent valves, possible head damage
- Water pump failure can come at the same time (it’s driven by the belt on this engine)
- Tensioner and idler pulley wear out together — never replace just the belt
The right way to do this job is a full timing belt kit: belt, water pump, tensioner, idler pulleys, cam and crank seals, and the thermostat while the system is open.

Step by Step
- Drain coolant — water pump comes off, system needs to be empty
- Remove drive belts and accessory pulleys for crank pulley access
- Crank pulley off — needs the right puller; this is where most DIY jobs go wrong
- Timing covers off, marks aligned — set TDC #1 cylinder, verify cam alignment
- Old belt + tensioner + idlers + water pump out
- New parts in — torque to spec, verify timing marks before turning the engine
- Refill coolant, reassemble accessories, road test

Same Job on Lexus, Avalon, Sienna, Highlander
The 1MZ-FE (3.0L) and 2GR-FE (3.5L) V6 share architecture across the Toyota / Lexus lineup. If you drive a Camry, Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, or Lexus ES/RX from this generation and you’re approaching 90k–100k miles, this job is on the calendar.
