Engine Misfire Symptoms – Diagnosis and Fix in Philadelphia
An engine misfire means one or more cylinders are not firing correctly. At TOP CONCEPT LLC in Philadelphia, misfires are one of the most common problems we diagnose. The good news: most misfires have a clear cause that shows up immediately on our diagnostic equipment.
Symptoms of an Engine Misfire
- Rough idle — engine shakes or vibrates at a stoplight
- Loss of power — car feels sluggish, especially on acceleration
- Check engine light on — often flashing, which means a serious misfire
- Poor fuel economy
- Smell of unburned fuel from exhaust
- Engine stutters or hesitates under load
Important: A flashing check engine light means the misfire is severe enough to damage the catalytic converter. Pull over safely and call us immediately.
Most Common Causes of a Misfire
- Worn spark plugs — the most common cause, especially after 60,000 miles
- Failed ignition coil — coil packs fail individually, causing a single-cylinder misfire
- Dirty or failed fuel injector — not delivering the right amount of fuel
- Vacuum leak — lean misfire affecting multiple cylinders
- Low compression — worn rings, burned valve, or head gasket issue
- Timing chain timing — stretched chain throws off valve/ignition timing
How We Diagnose a Misfire
- Read fault codes — the code tells us which cylinder is misfiring (e.g., P0301 = cylinder 1)
- Swap the coil pack from the misfiring cylinder to another — if the misfire follows the coil, the coil is bad
- Check spark plug condition — color, gap, and wear pattern
- Perform a fuel injector balance test — measures each injector’s output
- Compression test on the affected cylinder
Real Case — Philadelphia Customer
A 2014 Mercedes-Benz C300 came in with a P0302 code — cylinder 2 misfire. The customer had already replaced all 6 spark plugs elsewhere. We swapped the coil pack from cylinder 2 to cylinder 4. The fault code changed to P0304. New coil pack for cylinder 2, and the misfire was gone.
