Car Cranks But Won’t Start

Car Cranks But Won’t Start – Causes and Diagnosis in Philadelphia

When the engine cranks normally — you can hear it turning over — but it refuses to fire up, the problem is somewhere in the fuel, spark, or compression system. This is a very different situation from a car that won’t crank at all. At TOP CONCEPT LLC in Philadelphia, we diagnose this kind of no-start almost every day.

Symptoms

  • Engine turns over normally (normal cranking speed and sound)
  • Car does not start — no ignition, no firing
  • May smell like fuel (flooded) or no fuel smell at all
  • Check engine light may or may not be on
  • Problem may be intermittent — sometimes starts, sometimes does not

Most Common Causes

  • No fuel — failed fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or empty tank (even if gauge shows fuel)
  • No spark — failed ignition coil, crankshaft sensor, or distributor (older vehicles)
  • No compression — jumped timing chain, broken timing belt, or serious internal engine damage
  • Flooded engine — too much fuel in cylinders (especially after multiple start attempts)
  • Bad camshaft position sensor — engine cranks but ECU cannot sync fuel injection timing
  • Failed mass airflow (MAF) sensor — wrong air/fuel ratio prevents combustion

How We Diagnose It

  1. Scan for fault codes first — crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor, fuel system codes
  2. Check fuel pressure at the rail — is fuel getting to the injectors?
  3. Test for spark at the coil packs with a spark tester
  4. Check compression with a gauge — especially on high-mileage engines
  5. Inspect timing chain or belt position if compression is low

Real Case — Philadelphia Customer

A 2011 BMW 328i came in cranking perfectly but not starting. No fault codes stored. Fuel pressure was good. Spark was good. Compression was good on 5 cylinders — but cylinder 6 had zero compression. The timing chain had jumped a tooth on the exhaust cam. After a timing chain replacement and resetting valve timing, the car started on the first crank.
